Is adding thematic ETFs to a diversified portfolio worthwile?

Hello! I was wondering if it's worth adding niche ETFs, like those focused on electric vehicles, hydrogen, or green energy, to a diversified portfolio with funds like VDHG or DHHF? I’m curious if these could add value, especially with issues like global warming, but I’m concerned it might lead to more speculation than long-term investing and disrupt the balance of a diversified portfolio. What are your thoughts?

Hello! It’s great to see your interest in diversifying your investment portfolio and considering the impact of global trends like green energy. Adding niche ETFs, such as those focused on electric vehicles, hydrogen, or green energy, to a diversified portfolio that includes broad-market funds like VDHG or DHHF can indeed add value, but it also comes with certain considerations.

Pros of Adding Niche ETFs:
1. Growth Potential: Sectors like electric vehicles and green energy are expected to grow significantly due to increasing environmental awareness and government policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions. This growth can translate into potentially higher returns.
2. Diversification: By investing in niche areas, you can diversify your portfolio further, potentially reducing risk and increasing returns through exposure to different industries.
3. Alignment with Values: Investing in green energy or sustainable technologies can align with personal values, particularly if you are concerned about issues like global warming.

Cons of Adding Niche ETFs:
1. Volatility: Niche markets can be more volatile and susceptible to market fluctuations compared to broad-market funds. This can lead to higher risk.
2. Speculation: As you rightly pointed out, investing in trending sectors can sometimes lean more towards speculation, especially if driven by short-term news cycles rather than long-term fundamentals.
3. Impact on Diversification: While niche ETFs can add diversification, overexposure to a specific sector can skew the balance of your portfolio, potentially leading to higher risk if that sector underperforms.

Balancing the Portfolio:
To maintain a balanced approach, consider allocating a smaller portion of your portfolio to these niche ETFs. This way, you can participate in the potential growth of these sectors

I wrote an article about thematic ETFs here which you might find interesting and it might answer many of your concerns about it: https://pearler.com/explore/learn/blog/themat...

Hope that helps with your thinking.
