I have VDHG - Is it pointless to invest in other more specific ETFs

Hello - I am early in my investing journey switched from Raiz about a year ago and went with two ETFs and two companies I was willing to 'gamble' on. Anyway, with my ETFs one is VDHG - now whenever I look at other ETFs that I might want to invest in I am like 'what's the point' because they are generally covered in the VDHG make up. My question is - is it pointless - should I just keep directing my $$ into my current ETFs or for example would it not 'hurt' to include something like ETHI or any other similar more specific ETF?

Kristi this is an incredibly well put question… that many many people on here ask themselves, and yet it’s still hard to give a yes or no answer!

I can say, there are many investors that have VDHG and other ETFs. And some top them all up, whereas some started with VDHG and then moved onto others, but didn’t sell out of their initial holdings. None of this really helps with your question though.

Have a read of some of the replies in these two threads, the people who’ve answered have given it some decent thought. Hope these help!

Hey Kristi.

Nick has answered this pretty well and given you some additional reading material already, but I’ll add a little…

While it’s not ‘pointless’ as such to add other things, there’s also no need to do so. Meaning, VDHG is designed as an entirely portfolio in one, as you might know already. It has thousands upon thousands of companies from all over the world, so any other ETF you add will likely just be adding more of certain companies (it’s unlikely those companies are missing from VDHG given how broad it is).

But if you like other ETFs for whatever reason, then it isn’t harmful (it wouldn’t ‘hurt’ to use your words).

As long as you’re investing regularly and choosing reasonably diversified ETFs like you already have then that’s the main thing.

Hope that helps and happy investing!
